Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rotary evaporator and what is it used for?
A rotary evaporator, often called a rotovap, is a device used for solvent removal and sample purification by evaporation under reduced pressure. It consists of vacuum and rotation systems to accelerate the rate of evaporation. Rotary evaporation is one of the simplest methods to remove solvents quickly and easily. A rotary evaporator is widely used in chemical, cannabis, research, and pharmaceutical laboratories.
How does a rotary evaporator work?
In general, rotary evaporation works through the combined effect of vacuum, rotation, and a condenser system. A vacuum is applied to reduce the boiling point of solvents, which helps evaporate solvents at a much lower temperature. At the same time, rotation increases the sample’s surface area, promotes uniform heat distribution, increases the evaporation rate, and prevents bumping.
Why is the condenser needed if the goal is evaporation?
Although the goal is evaporation, a condenser is required to condense the solvent vapor and convert it back into a liquid so it can be collected, reused, and prevented from being exposed to the environment.
Why does vacuum and rotation work better than just heating?
Vacuum lowers the boiling point of solvents by reducing pressure, resulting in evaporation at lower temperatures. Rotation makes a thin film for faster mass transfer and reduces bumping, and the closed vapor path improves safety and keeps the lab environment cleaner.
Does faster rotation mean faster evaporation?
Not always. Rotation helps by increasing surface area, spreading liquid into a thin film, and improving evaporation. However, further increasing speed after a stable thin film has formed may cause poor film formation and foaming.
What are the differences between distillation and a rotary evaporator?
Distillation and rotary evaporation are both used to purify and separate liquids but differ in their operation and suitability for different types of samples. Distillation works at atmospheric pressure, making it slower for solvent removal, whereas a rotary evaporator uses vacuum and rotation to operate, making it suitable for lower temperatures, faster solvent removal, and heat-sensitive materials.
What is the best vacuum level for a rotary evaporator?
The rotary evaporator vacuum level depends on the type of solvent. Generally, target a pressure where the solvent boils 20°C below the bath temperature. For solvents with a low boiling point, like acetone, a vacuum of 200 to 300 mbar is best; 50 to 150 mbar is best for ethanol; and less than 2 mbar is best for high-boiling-point solvents like DMF for precise and successful evaporation.
What are the main components of a rotary evaporator?
The main components of a rotary evaporator consist of a motor-driven rotation unit, a heating bath, a condenser, a vacuum system, and a receiving flask. In addition, a vacuum controller to regulate the pressure and a chiller to continuously provide cold fluid to the condenser may be included.
How do I choose the right rotary evaporator?
To choose the best evaporator for your application, you need to consider the sample volume, solvent type, temperature needs, vacuum requirements, and condenser for safe and efficient evaporation.
Why is my rotovap not reaching the target pressure?
Possible causes may be leaks in the joints and vacuum system or improper vacuum pump capacity.
What factor plays a crucial role in the performance of a rotary evaporator?
The vacuum level and stability play a significant role in the performance of a rotary evaporator. Vacuum lowers the boiling point of the solvent and increases the rate of evaporation. In addition, rotation and the condenser help maintain smooth and continuous evaporation.
Why does the sample bump?
Generally, sample bumping happens due to a sudden drop in pressure or because the bath is too hot. Avoiding overfilling the flask, reducing vacuum gradually, and increasing rotation in steps help solve the problem.
